Kalaidescope:The Year That Was .... 2010

Let see for 2010, we have a YES, an octopus that can be a fortune-teller, a dosage of almost endless bus accidents, lots of politicking, freak floods, a director scandal, a Royal divorce, a leaking problem and lots more. There are more but you dont expect me to round up a year of events 365 days in this blogpost right? A series of stories for the year events
Will Malaysian say YES?
With much fanfare and Taiwan Susan Boyle at the launch, YES was launched on 19 November 2010. What is YES? YES is YTL foray into the internet business through its fastest '4G' mobile internet with voice network that is deemed to be a people network. However, people started to say NO, when its website cant be accessed as the timer in the website goes off. Apparently, it was being hacked. And in few days later YES says SORRY to Malaysians by offering a FREE 10GB usage. This action was being praised by many as YES dont simply 'lepas tangan' of the problems. My own experience with YES was a good experience, I must say 'for the 1st time in my life have I seen a mobile internet (not wired) achieve up to 8 mbps! Well, it doesnt stay at 8 mbps all the times but most of the time it is at a satisfactory level to allow me to stream radio smoothly. So, it is remained to be seen whether YES can maintain this 'amazing speed when you say YES' and will more Malaysian say YES to amazing things?
Paul The Octopus, The Real Winner of FIFA world cup 2010
Do you like eating 'sotong tutuk', well then I suggest you refrain from eating 'sotong tutuk' anymore as it could be Paul's the octopus family members, LOL! Joking only. All of the sudden the world spotlight moved from the annoying vuvuzelas sounds into the aquarium tank in Germany. All thanks, to the late Paul the octopus who predicted correctly many matches involving the Germany team in world cup 2010. Many people say it was being biased as it grown up in Germany soil, however one of the matches it predicted Germany loses against Serbia correctly. And, Paul was bookie's worst enemy and wanted it to be killed. And later, Paul became the enemies of the Dutchs who lost against Germany in the finals. They wanted Paul to be roasted, thus it have to get security protections to prevent people from 'trying to do something bad to it'. Paul became an instant celebrity and even Holloywood wanted to make a movie based on its story. However, recently Paul died. RIP Paul the Octopus, you have created a lot of buzz to world cup 2010
Beast of Terror, Machine of Horror
I have lost count of how many bus accidents that have occurred in 2010. The latest was just 2-3 weeks ago, in Cameron Highlands road involving a bus and 28 were killed in what was known as the worst bus accident in Malaysia. And even more tragic on the nite of Triple 10, a many car pile up caused by a bus that 'hopped/jumped', and quite a few lives were lost. And as I returned from Genting Highlands end of October, a bus accident occured, another in April occurred in Bukit Gantang and lots more, bus accidents tales it would be too depressing to read so many accident stories. So I shall stop here and the blame game starts, the signboard, highway, spare parts, drivers, road, and the list goes on and on. A very interesting one is the driver got no lesen in 1 of the case!
Stop All the Politicking, Get Back to work
A year filled will 'by-elections', 'quits', etc. Malaysia political arena is too colourful sometimes too colourful that it blinds the hindsight of the government that it had a more important task to do, manage the country, improve the economy, put food on our table! Yes no doubt the government had done its work but there is still too much politicking in the name of the work. The by elections shows that BN is regaining its strength, but PR maybe gaining momentum as seen from DAP winning Sibu. From the party assemblies, we can see that UMNO wanted to 'protect Putrajaya at all costs', while in the PR congress we were introduced to a new 'orange movement' for a more equitable Malaysian. As Zainon Ahmad in The Sun said 'Deliver first then let the rakyat decide'. Im not going to talk about the 'quitters' since, it will be long but these people are 'shooting themselves in their own foot'
Mother Nature Rage!
In June, Singapore was hit by a series of flood that not only affect the normal Singaporean but that of a Minister as reported in the media. And that Minister went for a 'good talk' with his fellow Minister in charge of floods. Some people were blaming overdevelopment but apparently, the worst hit area Orchard Road where the biggest lost was incurred, it was no thanks to a blocked culvert and they got it fixed recently. Hopefully, no more freak floods hit Singapore. On our homefront, Kedah was badly hit and the Federal government was quick to hit out at the PR led Kedah government for not giving more assistance to the flood victims. For sure this earns BN some points from the Kedahan and we shall see if PR can hold on Kedah?
Alls Well End Well?
Ku sangka cuaca panas hingga ke petang tetapi hujan pula tengah hari. Have you ever heard of this Malay proverb, it means, things may not go smoothly as you thought. Singapore was rocked by a few young ladies coming out to say that a famous director, Jack Neo had 'scandal' with them. This is really a blow to Jack's family but it seems that his wife can take it and forgive him. Jack had brought his family gone hiding for a few months for the storm to cool down! Recently he appeared back into the media spotlight with his new movie. Will his acting as Liang Po Po again makes people forget the Jack Neo saga? Time shall tell! Across the border, in my 2nd home country, Brunei, the Sultan has divorced his 2nd wife a Malaysian journalist from TV3, Azrinaz Mazhar in June 2010. According to The Brunei Times report, "His Majesty, for specific reasons (which were not disclosed) has divorced Azrinaz Mazhar with a single talak. After that annoucement was aired via RTB on the nite, Twittersphere was buzzing with Bruneians cheering as the Sultan made a wise decision. Apparently, at first I didnt knew what was the story behind their cheering but now I know partly, but better keep it secret, we are not allowed to meddle with Royal affairs. And someone joked that marah ni Giant, esok barang runcit naik harga ni!
Leak That Caused A Headache
Towards the end of this year, WikiLeaks make headline as a lot of countries became its victim. Among them Singapore and Malaysia. Singapore dismissed them as a 'cocktail talk', while Malaysia was not happy about this. And apparently, Mr Julian the founder of WikiLeaks also have a headache of his own his sex trial!
Well there you have it my selection of 7 stories to sum up 2010. Coming up after this post is my own 2010 roundup
Happy New Year 2011 and be more responsible of your actions
